Scars come in all shapes and sizes. And no matter how big, small, dark, light, raised, or smooth they are, there’s no denying that the permanent skin fixtures take a toll on our confidence. But Monica Singh isn’t letting her facial scarring get the best of her. Instead, she’s flipping the script and embracing her scars—and sharing her story with Allure.
Growing up, Singh was “pampered by her parents” and considered herself—by society’s standards—to be beautiful. But that all changed after a guy she wasn’t interested in began harassing and stalking her. “It was a one-sided love affair for him,” she says. His obsession with Singh was so intense that after her multiple refusals to date him, the disgruntled man recruited a group of friends to follow her and throw “what felt like coffee” on her face. Turns out the flaming out liquid was actually acid. The skin-destroying liquid covered everything: Singh’s entire upper torso, 70 percent of her face, her legs, her arms, everything. “I could smell my skin burning,” she recounts. “I could smell my clothes burning off of me.”
Even after doctors tried to dilute the acid with water, Singh was “declared dead.” But eventually she came to and slowly healed—and wasn’t allowed to see herself during the process. “After a month, I saw my face, and it was all black—all of the seven layers of the skin was like a stone,” she says. “The face—my identity—was stolen from me.” And yet, Singh found a way to persevere.
